This one came out of a day in Banff when the peaks stopped looking like mountains to me and started looking like a stack of coloured planes catching the light. I painted it in acrylic on a 36 x 36 inch canvas and built the range in bold, faceted shapes - lilacs and cool blues for the far rock, warm ochres and greens for the trees crowding the foreground. I wanted the geometry to carry the piece: clean edges, confident colour, and just enough gesture in the pines to keep it breathing.
It's a square format, which I love for a painting like this - from across a room it reads as a single graphic statement, and up close it rewards a longer look. The canvas is finished with a protective varnish and arrives ready to hang. As with all my originals, it's a one-of-a-kind work, signed, and shipped carefully packaged from my studio.
